Abstract

Formulation & Evaluation of Enteric Coated Tablets of Metronidazole for Colonic Drug Delivery

ABSTRACT

The present study was an attempt to formulate and evaluate enteric coated tablets for metronidazole. Different core tablets were prepared and formulation (F3) was selected for further enteric coating, based on the disintegration time. Enteric coating was carried out using different polymers like Eudragit S 100 and Cellulose Acetate Pthalate. The core tablet was coated with Eudragit S 100 and Cellulose Acetate Pthalate. The concentration of the polymers in the coating solution was taken same. Disintegration studies showed that the formulation failed in 0.1 N HCL media. Hence the quantity of enteric coating was increased. In vitro analysis of the developed tablets was carried out. Result from disintegration time and dissolution rate studies indicate that Eudragit S 100 coated tablets (E3) good integrity, desirable for enteric coated tablets. Stability studies indicate that the optimized formulation were stable for two months. This study conclude that the Eudragit S100 posses good enteric coating property as compared to Cellulose Acetate Pthalate.
